Acceptable Mario clone - SUPER MANO BROS. - JUNGLE WORLD [Android]

Acceptable Mario clone

Those who have a bad attitude towards Super Mano Bros. will undoubtedly call it a cheap Super Mario rip-off. Those who have a good attitude towards the little game will see it as a loving homage to the great classic of the platforming genre and emphasize the excellent playability of this free, colorful adventure.

I'm a bit torn between two stools. On the one hand, Super Mano Bros. isn't just inspired by the gameplay and character design of the Mario games, it's blatantly copying them. On the other hand, it's simply well-made, perfectly playable, and also refrains from advertising and purchasable items in an exemplary manner.

Story

The plot — if you can even call the short intro we see at the start of the game that — centers on the protagonist "Mano," who proposes to "Princess Pineapple."

She accepts and is immediately kidnapped by the evil "Dragon Boss." The goal, of course, is to rescue his smitten sweetheart.

Presentation

The visuals are cute and colorful. As mentioned, the characters and game world are so obviously inspired by Nintendo's Mario that it's hard to detect any sense of originality. As a result, everything feels very familiar. In fact, the backgrounds against which we hop around are pleasantly varied and feature various themes – including the usual suspects: jungle, ice, underwater, dungeon, or castle.

The jumping sounds and coin-collecting sound effects seem to have been ripped directly from Nintendo games. The rest of the soundtrack is functional and generic.

Gameplay

The controls are simple and precise: Various self-explanatory buttons appear on the screen. One each for left, right, and jump movements. This fortunately saves us from the tedious task of swiping across the screen to hopefully perform the right action. The button layout is therefore incredibly simple and incredibly responsive.

There are also power-ups like an expanding heart, which allows Mano to take two hits, or a fireball to shoot enemies. There are also a few collectibles to discover, which gradually grant us cosmetic skins.

In-Game Advertising

Since Super Mano Bros. - Jungle World is available for free on Android, it's obvious that there will be ads and in-game purchases scattered throughout. However, these are discreetly kept to a minimum and are completely optional.

  • For example, duplicate collectibles can be exchanged for watching an ad (no gambling - we see what we receive when trading).
  • Reward chests are only opened by watching an ad.
  • There's an ad after each level ends.
  • Fireballs are only available in a limited number and can be replenished by watching an ad.
  • Little things like that that you're already familiar with from many other free Android games.

It must be said, however, that Super Mano Bros. - Jungle World can be played completely offline. If you simply disable your Wi-Fi connection, you'll miss all the wonderful ads, but you'll also find that the game still works perfectly and doesn't become significantly more difficult.
