Reluctant superheroine | Sunblaze (PC)

Reluctant superheroine

Sunblaze is a platformer that requires high accuracy and quick reflexes. This combination will frustrate some players and reward others.

Fortunately, there is always the possibility to defuse the immense level of difficulty, which means that even beginners can achieve their success in Sunblaze.

Josie, our protagonist, is stuck in a superhero training simulation. Her father - a retired superhero - desperately tries to get her out again. But with no success.

So for Josie, there is only the possibility to face one insane challenge after another and die thousands of virtual deaths before she can finish the simulation.

"Where there's a will, there's a way." This is exactly the motto of Sunblaze. Our heroine is locked in a room with several death traps and has to go with double jumps, dashes, or by shimmying along the level environment to a computer chip that unlocks the next room.

To achieve this "simple" goal, we move through pretty 2D levels. Beautiful colors, pleasant music and cute sprites make Sunblaze an engaging entertainment. But appearances are deceptive. Pretty much everything we touch either kills us or falls into the depths when touched.

There is no doubt that the gameplay is designed for us to pass as quickly as possible. Any wrong move ends in a screen death and resets the current room. Only by memorizing and correspondingly fast reflexes can you progress in the game.

It's annoying to always die in the same places just because you pressed the jump button a little bit too early and next time a millisecond too late, but it's just as rewarding when the saving computer chip is finally reached after another round of insane gamepad acrobatics.

Especially since the solution of a room is immediately apparent. The question never arises "What do I have to do?" - but rather one thinks "Oh God, no. I see...".

What's more, Josie's controls are accurate and traceable at all times, no matter how many desperate attempts it takes to move forward.

Freely adjustable level of difficulty

Fortunately, Sunblaze always gives us the opportunity to mitigate the high difficulty. On the one hand, the so-called "Zen mode" can be activated in the main menu, which makes the game much easier and also allows beginners to have fun with Sunblaze. On the other hand, even in the normal game, the pause menu can be called up at any time and the level of difficulty can be freely adjusted.

For example, infinite double jumps and dashes can be activated, which makes the game much easier. In fact, Sunblaze even allows you to activate an invulnerability, but this will cost you any sense of achievement.

However, since the Zen mode does not contain all levels of the game, you should stick directly to the normal mode and simply put together your own difficulty level there. Despite this possibility, Sunblaze remains challenging.

I myself also played it with infinite double jumps and dashes. Nevertheless, I am regularly desperate.

Humor & Charm

Sunblaze Sparkles McGlitterhoof
Die KI "Sparkles Mc Glitterhoof" zeigt sich uns als Einhorn.

But it was actually a pleasant despair. With each attempt you get a little bit further and get to know the current space better and better. Progressing is rewarded by the game with regular cutscenes that exude a pleasant charm. During her involuntary stay in the simulator, Josie encounters an AI in the form of a unicorn. Fittingly, Josie gives her the name "Spakles McGlitterhoof" – Of course, not without first asking if the AI could also show itself as a Pokémon.

Thanks to such amusing interruptions, despite the high level of difficulty, you stay on track and eagerly await the next seemingly impossible challenge.

Sunblaze - Conclusion:

Sunblaze is a really good game. That will regularly spin you through the shortages. The cool pixel optics, coupled with humor and the freely adjustable difficulty level make Sunblaze a little insider tip for anyone who likes challenging platformers.
