Square, practical, quite okay
Somehow the cartoon about the little yellow sponge has always been very sympathetic to me – especially the first seasons, before some newer episodes were turned off for me "old bag".
PERFECT: Because, that's pretty much my impression of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. In the beginning, I celebrated the game - but the longer it went, the more I had to force myself to keep playing.
As the suffix "Rehydrated" suggests, this title is a remake of the game released in 2003. Nothing has been changed in terms of content. Only the graphics have been polished, which means that SpongeBob now makes a much more series-loyal and colorful impression than in PS2 & GameCube times.
The story is explained quite quickly: Plankton has built a bunch of robots, over which he loses control and which are now spreading uncontrollably all over Bikini Bottom.
In order to restore peace, we take on the role of SpongeBob and his friends Patrick and Sandy, between whom we can switch back and forth at bus stops.
In the best platformer manner, we jump over abysses, collect objects and gradually switch off the production facilities of the robots that have gone wild.
Often you really feel immersed in the series and recognize many things: So we roam through the jellyfish fields, explore the hero's cave of mermaid man and bluefish boy, chill with buddy bubble in the Goo lagoon or fight our way through the trench of advanced darkness - it's a real feast!
Later in the game, however, the level design decreases a lot and we are forced to switch back and forth between the characters every minute, just to advance a few steps at a time. That's exactly when it becomes very tedious to get through to continue playing, even if the game doesn't show any other major weaknesses.
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated – Conclusion:
Well-known locations, lots of allusions, good controls and the original dubbing voices. SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle For Bikini Bottom, will completely satisfy fans of the series.
For everyone else, it's a decent platformer, with design flaws later in the game.
